But Norwex does things a little differently.

The timing was impeccable for this company – they entered the market for chemical-free cleaning products in the mid-90s, during the revival of bohemian, bell bottom wearing hippies and the birth of the movement for all-natural, organic products.

Overview

Norwex is a Norwegian MLM founded in 1994 with the goal of providing homes with chemical-free cleaning products. Their mission is “Improving quality of life by radically reducing chemicals in our homes.”

Bjorn Nicolaisen founded the company after discovering a special microfiber cloth that was extremely effective at cleaning his windshield using nothing but water. He developed an entire list of household products that could effectively clean without using any chemicals, and Norwex was born.

Nicolaisen is a former attorney who has worked with the Norwegian Ministry of Environment and the General of Norway, so he knows his stuff. He’s currently still the Chairman of Norwex.

Norwex now has over 20,000 distributors, operates in Norway, Canada, the U.S., Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Australia.

How much does Norwex cost?
It costs $200 to join Norwex, and that includes a starter kit with product.

Registering for a consultant website, which is pretty much a requirements nowadays, is another $9-10/month.

In order to stay active, you need to sell $250 in product every 3 months. If you become inactive, you’ll be charged a fee to reactivate your account. After 12 months without sales, you’re no longer considered a consultant.

Products

Norwex is known as the chemical-free cleaning product company, although they’ve since expanded to offer personal care products as well.

Their flagship product is the microsilver cloth (also known as EnviroCloth), thespecial microfiber cleaning cloth that inspired Nicolaisen to start Norwex in the first place. These cloths are made of anti-bacterial fibers that attract dirt, grease, and dust, breaking down grime that would usually require chemicals to break down. The cloth also self-cleanses after 24 hours.

Cleaning and personal care products contain natural, botanical ingredients, replacing harmful chemicals with enzymes.

Production is mostly done at a production facility in China that the company opened in 2009.

For Your Home

These products include kitchen cleaning products, floor cleaning products, “home essentials”, and microfiber cloths.

Opportunity

This company still relies heavily on the home party model, which is ineffective at best, and a gag-worthy money pit that will cause you to lose all your friends at worst.

You MIGHT be able to recruit a few friends and family members to come to your home party in exchange for food (a la Tastefully Simple) or a free makeover (a la a million and one cosmetics MLMs), but even those are questionable. Reps eventually dry up their “warm market” of friends and family members who are tired of desperate sales pitches.

But getting your friends and family to come to a sales pitch/home party where they get to…watch you clean? Yeah, right. Dream on.

It’s just not a sustainable way to make money.

Even if you do manage to get some decent sales at your home parties, it won’t amount to a lot in profit. But you do get some free/discounted product.

  • Sell up to $249.99 in product and you get 8% of your sales in free product.
  • Sell $250-$749.99 in product and you get 10% of your sales in free product.
  • Sell $750 or more and you get 12% of your sales in free product.

You also get a free window cloth for each party you book.

Consultants earn 35% commission on their personal sales.

Let’s look at an example. Say you manage to get a huge group of people together, and they’re all super stoked about cleaning products and ready to open up those checkbooks. Your pitch is on point, and you make a whopping $1,000 in sales.

Keep in mind how difficult this is to do. Their products range from around $10-$40, so you’d have to sell a LOT of microfiber cloths and dishwashing liquid to hit those numbers. Like 50 products. Even with 10 people, that’s 5 products per person… and it’s not easy to get people to give up their Saturday afternoon to come over and listen to you give a sales pitch, so 10 people is being generous. Not to mention, selling 5 products per person is an unrealistic goal, considering you’re lucky if everyone in attendance buys one product.

But let’s just say you really hit it big this time. $1,000 in sales would net you $350 in commission, $120 in free product, and a free window cloth.

This isn’t bad, but it’s nothing outstanding. If you can replicate this once a week, you’d be earning just above minimum wage. But replicating those kinds of numbers at your home parties on a regular basis isn’t sustainable – ultimately, you run out of friends and family to invite, and people don’t need to buy new dish rags every week.

Like all MLMs, the real money is in your referral commissions. With Norwex, you earn commission on the sales of everyone you recruit, and the people they recruit, and the people they recruit, and so on. The higher you move up in rank, the more levels you unlock in your downline, the more you earn in referral commissions. But recruiting a massive downline and moving up in rank is not easy.

Recap

Their products are generally well-reviewed, and their mission is great. The company has been around for a while and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.

However, you’re not going to be making much money (if any) from selling them.

You need to be very skilled in marketing and sales and especially in networking to make real money, as you’re going to need to have a huge group of friends and acquaintances who trust you and would be interested in joining your MLM. Most people simply end up losing friends, because no one wants to be asked once a week to join a “business opportunity” that costs money instead of generating it.

Networks dry up fast in this industry. Real fast.

But if it’s financial freedom you seek and you like automated ways to build passive income, there are better ways.

Overview

Numis Network was started by a handful of serious MLM vets, including Ian Cordell and Chris Kent. Both have spent decades in the industry, and they previously founded IDSTC, a company that specializes in developing software and compensation plans for the direct selling industry.

Jake Kevorkian, another founder who also has over 20 years of MLM experience, was the #1 earner at a health and wellness MLM that sold before Numis came into creation.

The company has been around since 2009, and they’re registered in Tampa, Florida.

Their name, Numis, comes from the word numismatic, as in numismatic coins. Still sounds like gibberish?

Numismatic coins are collectible coins. I don’t mean just any coins you might find at an antique shop or home shopping network advertisement. Numismatic coins are the cream of the crop for coin collectors. They’re concerned about something very important here – rarity.

According to CoinWeek, these include everything from the most recent U.S. Mint coins to coins that are so rare their value is in the millions. There’s potential in the industry for it to hit the multi-billion dollar mark. [1]

The company staffs a couple numismatic coin experts and industry icons, including Keith Love and Mike Mezack.

However, on July 19th, 2013, Numis Network officially merged with World Ventures, a luxury travel MLM that I’ve reviewed before.  At the time of the merger, the companies allowed distributors to sell World Ventures products, continue selling collectible coins, or do both.

It seems like an odd combination because it is. The reason for the merger was never fully explained by either company. According to a letter sent by Numis to its distributors, the connection was that Numis offers a lot of incentive vacations and World Ventures specialized in travel, so the pairing makes sense, right?

Sureee. It looks like Numis just went out of business and was paid off to give their distributors a bridge between a ship that’s already sinking and a ship that will probably sink in the future.

The Numis Network website no longer exists, and World Ventures (shocker) no longer sells the Numis collectible coins.

How much does Numis cost?
It costs $495 to become a Numis distributor, and you need to receive a monthly autoship of one coin which you get at a discounted monthly membership fee.

Products

For rare coin collectors, “mint” condition is very important. In fact, there are even grades to the “mint” condition of a coin, like grades to the quality of a diamond.

Coins can get bumped and scratch as they’re being produced, and the most pristine of coins are graded “MS70”. The experts at Numis find the rarest, highest quality mint coins out there, and purchase them directly from the agencies who grade the coins, so you know they’re legit.

New members can sign up for a monthly subscription that costs $79.85 (imagine paying almost $80 for $.50 cents?), and they automatically get a new collectible coin shipped to them each month. The first month of the subscription is discounted at $49.95.

Customers can also buy individual coins and other products. These include a 3-month gift subscription, jewelry made from collectible coins, key chains, money clips, watches, and other accessories.

Opportunity

Numis has a 3-for-free program that allows you to get your monthly autoship product for free if you refer 3 people in a month. If you refer 6 people in a month, you get 2 coins. 9 people, you get 3 coins, etc etc.

Distributors receive retail commission on personal sales, which is the difference between their wholesale price and retail value.

Depending on rank, you can receive 10%-25% on the BV of your preferred customers’s purchases.

Accelerator Bonuses award you 10%-50% commission on accelerator package sales.

Team commissions are given out on a binary pay plan and range from 10%-12.5% on your weaker leg, down to unlimited levels. There are maximum payouts. There’s also a binary matching bonus that ranges from 5%-40%.

Bonus pools, car incentives, vacations, and other perks are available to the highest ranking distributors.

Recap

There may be some serious coin collectors out there, but collectible coins are NOT an investment.

Unlike gold or silver, they don’t have intrinsic value. They are not an asset. A bank would never consider them to be valued at more than their face value (i.e. an ultra rare mega mint first ever made nickel is still just valued at 5 cents).

The commission plan is good, but the start up costs are a little insane.

It doesn’t matter though, because Numis’s light has been extinguished for a while now. Their “merger” with World Ventures appears to have been more of a quiet disappearance. So it goes in the world of MLM, so it goes.

Look, if it’s financial freedom you seek and you like automated ways to build passive income, there are better ways.

Overview

INFINii is run by Hitesh Juneja, Kevin Hokoana, and Jason Rose. This is the same group that created DS Domination, an MLM that claimed to teach members how to make money online through dropshipping.

The two companies have some key differences, but on a lot of levels, INFINii kind of just looks like a rebranding of DS Domination.

DS Domination also promised members that they didn’t need ANY previous knowledge or experience whatsoever. And they didn’t, but part of that was because the “dropshipping” training they offered wasn’t true dropshipping, but rather an easier (and less profitable) form of dropshipping that entails reselling stuff on eBay from places like Amazon for inflated prices.

As you might guess, the more buzz DS Domination got, the more saturated eBay became with new sellers all selling the same thing, the more impossible it became to even make enough money to pay off DS Domination’s monthly membership. People realized this, DS Domination started to fall from grace…

…and along came INFINii.

The founders of INFINii have been running these kinds of MLMs for about 8 years now, and INFINii has been around for 3 years. According to the founders, INFINii is their “ultimate vision…combining the worlds of eCommerce, Digital content, Freelance service exchange, and Human Interaction.”

Not quite sure what that means (or why they decided to randomly capitalize words), but let’s find out.

How much does INFINii cost?
INFINii has three membership levels.

Prime – $49.95/month

Offers basic eCommerce training for Amazon, eBay, and Google.

Surge – $149.95/month

Offers advanced techniques for Amazon and eBay.

Excel – $399.99/month

Offers training for people who want to start selling their own products and building a brand.

Products

The above memberships are the products. There’s essentially no differentiation between customer and affiliate, which is never a good sign. It usually means that you can count on making almost 100% of your profit on recruiting rather than the product itself, which is really just a placeholder.

The Prime membership teaches you how to sell products from places like Amazon on eBay at a marked up price and then go order the product on Amazon with the buyer’s shipping information entered in.

What they’re teaching you is actually called arbitrage and not dropshipping. It’s basically dropshipping for people who are lazy or don’t know anything about internet marketing.

It sounds like a genius way to make some easy cash, but it’s actually very difficult to make any decent money in the long run because it relies on prices that are constantly changing, and it offers very, very small profit margins.

The software that you get includes…

  • An eBay listing tool that automates listing creation (all memberships)
  • Bonanza training for selling on the Google marketplace (all memberships)
  • INFINii app that lets you scan in-store retail items and tells you if they’d be profitable on Amazon (all memberships)
  • Analytics tools that tell you upcoming trends as well as your best and worst selling items (Surge & Excel memberships)
  • Amazon training that teaches you how to source items for wholesale (Surge membership)
  • Access to the INFINii marketplace (Surge membership)

“For example, if your aim is to generate $5,000 a month in net profits using INFINii’s ecommerce platform, you would require about $40,000 to $60,000 in sales every month. This would require for you to be amongst the top 5% of ecommerce sellers in the world.” [1]

You’d have to sell $40,000-$60,000 worth of marked up Amazon products PER MONTH just to make an okay salary of this product. You’d have to be in the top 5%, not of INFINii affiliates, but of all ecommerce sellers in the world, which includes huge corporations and people who are very, very experienced in the field.

Opportunity

Affiliates will tell you that INFINii has one of the best comp plans on the market because it pays its affiliates out on 75%.

This is not really true.

They have a hybrid compensation plan that pays out in 4 main ways.

JumpStart Bonus

This is a 25% one-time bonus on your personally sponsored customers.

Milestones Bonus & Check Match Bonus

These are one-time bonuses ranging from $50-$500 for reaching certain ranks, as well as a matching bonus on affiliates in your first two levels who reach a certain rank (Manager or up). You get 20% on affiliates in your Level 1 who reach one of these ranks, and 10% on affiliates in your Level 2 who reach one of these ranks.

Infinity Pay

Infinity pay pays out 10% of the BV of each leg with no minimum BV required.

Infinity Pay Check Match

This is matching pay off the Infinity Pay of all of your personal recruits. Percentages depend on rank, as follows:

  • Regional Manager: 5%
  • National Manager: 10%
  • Global Manager: 15%
  • Director: 30%
  • Senior Director: 35%

The plan doesn’t look like much unless you’re able to move up REALLY high in rank and build a HUGE downline, and their income disclosure statement supports that.

According to the statement, “Based on industry standards and company projections, the average annual gross income for Partners is projected to be anywhere between $500 and $2,000.”

Basically, most people are barely making enough to pay their cable bill, if they’re lucky.

This MLM looks a lot like most internet marketing/ecommerce MLMs – they use a mediocre training platform as a front for what is essentially a pyramid scheme.

If you can make money off this, you’ve got some talent. Most people won’t.

Overview

Neways is headquartered in Springville, Utah, and was founded way back in 1987 by Thomas and Leslie Mower. The company was originally named “Images and Attitudes”, which is about as 80s sounding as giant bangs and magenta eyeshadow. Good thing they decided to change it in 1992.

The direct sales company sells a little bit of everything with a “chemically safe” spin and is operational in 29 countries with its force of over 100,000 distributors and 10 offices.

On November 8th, 2006, the company was acquired by Golden Gate Capital, the same San Francisco-based private equity firm that purchased Herbalife before taking them public. [1] [2]

Robert Conlee was named CEO in 2012, a former executive at Xango (CEO) and Nu Skin.

Interestingly enough, Robert Conlee is also CEO of Modere. [3]

Nope, he’s not heading two companies at once: Modere and Neways are the same company. Modere appears to be a rebranding operation, and Neways has been transitioning to this new company since 2013. A webpage on neways.com titles “We are Now Modere” redirects to the Modere website, stating “We’ve Transformed” with no mention of Neways. [4]

Likewise, the Neways website makes no mention of a transition to Modere. For whatever reason, they don’t want people to make the connection.

Perhaps it’s because of legal charges they’ve run into in the past…which include multiple counts of distributing illegal substances (more on that later) AND multiple counts of tax evasion and fraud.

In 2002, the original owners of Neways were forced to surrender control of the company after being charged with conspiracy and tax evasion…they failed to report over $3 million in commissions. Two  more charges followed in the same year, including “obstructing an IRS investigation.” [5]

How much does Neways cost?
The sign-on fee is only $19.95, and the annual renewal fee is $23.

However, the real costs are hidden in the monthly autoship requirements. In order to remain active and qualified for the compensation plan, you need to hit 150 PV per month. This means you get 150 PV worth of product shipped to you every single month, whether or not you can actually sell that much.

Products

Neways products are focused on healthiness and natural ingredients, and the company claims to “provide products that minimize people’s exposure to potentially controversial ingredients.”

Their products, which are “the perfect blend of science and nature”, fall in to several different categories:

  • Household products: cleaning products, car accessories, laundry, kitchen
  • Health and Wellness products: supplements, fitness and weight loss plans, nutritional products
  • Personal Care products: cosmetics, bath products, skincare, dental products, aromatherapy

In fact, the company states that their products avoid over 3,000 potentially harmful ingredients. Their team of scientists studies potential ingredients to ensure that they aren’t even acutely toxic to animals or humans. They avoid any ingredients that could be irritating, allergy-inducing, or carcinogenic.

Despite all the research they claim to do, Neways fails to provide any list of what those harmful ingredients they avoid are.

They do give a few hints: body and bath products never contain DEA, TEA, talc, sodium laurel sulfate, or phthalates, and nutritional products are screened for microbes, pesticides, and heavy metals.

They also require that all their manufacturers comply with FDA regulations. Furthermore, all suppliers must submit the following paperwork to Neways before the company will agree to work with them:

  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • Confirmation of Implementation of Procedures
  • Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Analytical Testing Methods
  • Confirmation of Stability
  • Confirmation of Shelf Life
  • Disclosure of Excipients
  • Certificates of Analysis

Despite all the talk of healthy products, the company has been involved in a number of scandals.

In 1993, they had to recal one of their weight loss products because it apparently contained large doses of a prescription diuretic…pretty messed up. [6]

Then, in 2004, they plead guilty to the illegal distribution of Human Growth Hormone (HGH). HGH is a drug that’s illegal to consume without a prescription, and is most often abused by athletes alongside steroids. Neways was putting it in their BioGevity formula, a formula designed to keep consumers young and energized.

The company also offers Rank Advancement bonuses, a Monthly Selling Award, Breakout Bonus, Leadership Development Bonus, a Unilevel Bonus, and Revenue Sharing Pools.

The compensation plan is decent, and the products (aside from those involved in controversy) are generally well-liked. The company has been around since the 80s, too, so they’re somewhat established.

However, that established name means nothing now that they’re undergoing a complete rebranding. Between that and multiple run-ins with the law, they might as well be starting from scratch. Are you willing to take a chance?

Overview

Let’s say that one day, your friend Susan asks you and your pedicure pals to come over to her house for a manicure instead of making a trip to the salon. You say yes, and then spend your whole Saturday afternoon listening to a sales pitch for nail stickers that goes something like this:

For the same price as a manicure at the salon, you can spend 30 minutes in your bathroom trying to blow-dry nail stickers onto your nails while your kid screams at you from behind a closed door about his dirty underwear. Eventually, you’ll come out with stickers on your nails.

Then your friend Susan invites you to these sales pitch fake manicure “parties” every single Saturday for the rest of your life….This is basically Jamberry.

Okay, maybe not quite this bad. Let’s start with the basics.

Jamberry Nails was founded by two sisters who claim to be “revolutionizing” the nail-wrap industry.

Christy Hepworth, Lyndsey, and Keri Evans co-founded in Lindon, Utah in 2010 in their basement, just like the founders of every craft/beauty MLM ever.

According to Christy, “At the beginning, we did a couple of Groupons. We also went to an expo — made a little banner, and got a table and everything. Tons of people loved the product and placed orders. Then we were mailing out orders from the basement at all hours of the night.” [1]

By 2011 they were up and running with an e-commerce site and test products. They weren’t the first company to do nail wraps, but they broke into the game at the perfect time. Nail wraps were still fairly new in the manicure world and were pretty much just being used by nail artists in salons. Jamberry was one of the first companies to allow consumers to buy nail wraps directly online.

In 2013, the company had over 50 full-time employees and 7,000 part-time consultants.

Now, less than 4 years later, they have over 100,000 consultants across the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK.

Their new CEO, Elizabeth Thibaudeau, has been in executive leadership at a number of MLMs, including Nu Skin for the past 20 years. [2]

How much does Jamberry Nails cost?
Starter kits for new Jamberry Nails consultants cost $99 plus shipping and handling.

There are no monthly sales requirements for being a consultant and earning a base commission rate on personal sales, but in order to be an “active” consultant and earn overrides and bonuses, you need to sell at least 200 PV per month.

Products

Jamberry sells nail wraps, which are basically nail stickers that you apply with a heat source. Their designs are printed on, so it’s not only possible to rock nail art that’s more detailed than your traditional nail polish can achieve, but you can also have custom designs printed.

The company sells over 300 designs and then some rotating seasonal designs that include everything from superheroes from the latest summer blockbuster to college football teams to holiday themed nails. You can also order custom designs on their website. In an interview with NY Magazine, the founders said that one of their most popular custom orders is nail wraps with ultrasound photos on them.

They also sell a Jamberry heating tool to help you apply the nail wraps, but you can just use a hair dryer. Nail wraps last 2 weeks on average for nails and 4 weeks on average for toes.

The nail wraps cost around $15-$17.50 for a sheet of 18 nail wraps, or you can subscribe to their monthly gift box program for $25/month and receive a box of surprise nail wraps that are valued at around $30.

The nail wraps don’t have the best reviews, scoring only a 2.8 on Makeup Alley with less than half (45%) of customers saying they would buy them again. A lot of customers commented that the wraps are a pain to apply, don’t look great, and are uncomfortable or even sticky to wear. [3]

Jamberry Nails is pretty wholesome when it comes to MLM, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to be achieving “financial freedom” selling nail stickers any time soon.

At their commission rates, you’re getting $300 for every $1,000 you make in sales. Considering you’re selling nail stickers that cost less than $20, you’d have to have a LOT of friends willing to buy your stuff (like, over 50) every single month…just to make $3,600 a year.

That being said, it’s a fun way to make some side money and get some free product, especially if you’re into nail wraps.

But if it’s financial freedom you seek and you like automated ways to build passive income, there are better ways.

Overview

You probably heard about this company through the insane amounts of buzz they created, building up a contact list of almost half a million interested people before they even formally launched their platform.

(And then they finally did launch last fall with a nasty surprise for all involved, more on that later…)

Watch videos and ads, make money. Sounds fantastic.

A lot of their buzz came from the ridiculous claim they made about being “Bigger and better than YouTube”. Well, YouTube has 1 billion users and $4 billion in revenue so they’ve got some catching up to do. [1]

There’s basically no legit info to be found on this company, even months after launch. Their website now tells me “Viewing from within your country has been temporarily suspended while improvements to the system are in process, please check back later.”

Sketchy much?

It takes a LOT of digging to find any information on where this company is located or who founded or owns it (the domain is private). However, a LinkedIn page for Steve & Vicky Bruce shows that they might be the founders of THW Global, or at least executive positions within the company. Their entire profile is a long, cheesy ad for the company.

Aside from the ad, their profile shows little relevant experience other than a year as independent marketing consultants. And nearly 30 years of experience as…a Pipefitter at General Motors?

It does, at least, lead to one viewable page on their company’s website, but over half the page is an ad for 888TravelForLess.com, a travel savings membership program. Basically, these people are spam central. Svbruce.thwglobal.com

The page does show that over 1,600,000 members have been registered to date. Not sure if I believe that or not, but either way, no one’s made any money yet because their platform has been in beta testing since last August.

How much does THW Global cost?
Here’s where they dropped the bomb on users.

When they first started signing people up for the platform, they claimed it was free. When they finally launched beta testing, they turned around and announced it would cost users $39.95 a month in membership fees, and, wait for it…

$995 for a certification to qualify for a coded bonus.

$995 to get certified to watch videos, no joke. Their monthly membership fee of $39.95 alone is excessive, but a $995 certification? This dwarfs just about any other MLM’s fees, and it’s pretty obvious where their revenue is coming from. Hint: it’s not advertisers. It’s you.

Products

Their product is a video platform that they claim will be bigger and better than YouTube by paying viewers to watch their videos rather than paying content-creators to make the videos. Basically, flips the YouTube model on its head.

This sounds great at first glance if you’re looking for some fast, easy money.

But if you start to think about it, you realize it has got some major flaws.

First of all, YouTube pays its members to make videos rather than watch them, because content is king. Without their content, YouTube would be nothing. If THW Global isn’t paying for their video content, they’re either not going to have any (would explain why they’ve been in beta mode for way too long), or they’re going to have terrible content, which is not going to drive traffic.

But okay, they’re going to reel in advertisers to use the platform to air their content, and presumably those advertisers will pay the company to broadcast through their platform because they’ve got so many viewers.

The problem here is that these viewers are paid viewers. Advertisers are not going to whip out their wallets in a frenzy for paid viewers, because paid viewers aren’t going to be engaged, they aren’t going to interact, and they aren’t going to buy. They’re going to click play, tune out, and let their paycheck roll in.

In the end, advertisers aren’t paying for clicks and views. They’re paying for customers. THW Global users would not be likely customers.

Opportunity

So, you might have already guessed that there’s not much of anything out there in the way of a detailed compensation plan.

But they do claim you make $5 watching a video and can make up to $25 an hour. Seems a little unlikely, as no advertiser is going to pay $5 per view, but I digress.

You’re also only allowed to watch up to 10 hours of video a week. Still, an extra $1,000 a month for watching online videos is not bad. One executive even touts that an extra $1,000 a week for American families could have prevented the entire housing crisis by helping people meet their mortgage payments (the company clearly doesn’t shy away from grandiose statements).

Then there’s the MLM structure, which allows you to supposedly make money off the views of people you refer to the platform as well. No details on that yet.

Regardless, all of this seems highly unlikely. My guess is it’s going to be nearly impossible to even make the $39.95 you spend on your monthly membership back, let alone profit. That is, if they ever launch…

Recap

So the idea behind this platform is inherently flawed, and I think they’re well aware of that. In reality, they’re just trying to cash in on membership fees before they tank, like so many other MLMs.

They’ve been putting off their launch forever, and despite almost a year’s worth of buzz, a single person has yet to make any money off the company. I’m starting to wonder if they’re not just collecting mass email lists to sell to companies and spammers.

Either way, go ahead and give them a throwaway email if you want, but I wouldn’t spend a single dime with this MLM.

But if you like automated ways to build passive income, there are better ways.

Why North American Power couldn’t make MLM work

If MLM reps are all about #cleaneating and #allnatural trends, then they should be all about this #cleanenergy trend emerging in direct sales.

NAP was positioned to ride the wave, but despite years in business and even snatching a spot on the Forbes list, this company couldn’t make the MLM model work for them in the end.

It really screwed their distributors, who were perhaps a bit too trusting. Was I one of them?

Overview

Based in Norwalk, Connecticut, North American Power was founded by Kerry Breitbart and Carey Turnbull as a retail energy supplier working off a direct sales model. Think a wannabe Viridian Energy.

Brietbart in particular is pretty well known in the energy industry. He is a member of the National Energy Marketers Association Energy Committee, and he spent 20 years with United Companies as a crude oil broker and eventually President and CEO.

The company has over 70 full-time employees and rakes in $250-$500 million a year in revenue. [1] [2]

In 2011, NAP was fined $100,000 by the Maryland Public Service Commission after an investigation that showed the company was employing misleading sales practices. [3]

Breitbart attributed the problem to their rapid initial growth, and immediately reconciled the problems. NAP bounced right back, and in the same year were listed on the Forbes list of “America’s Most Promising Companies”. They ranked #57. [4]

The growth didn’t stop. By 2014, they were also making Inc. Magazine’s list of “America’s Fastest Growing Private Companies.” [5]

Anyone who knows the first thing about MLM knows that they don’t fare well in regulated industries, though. Direct sales is too riddled with accusations regarding product value, product claims, recruitment practices, and Ponzi schemes to go up against additional federal and state regulations.

This is probably why energy MLMs are rarely sustainable (pun intended). The energy industry is filled with rules and regulations that don’t mix well with network marketing.

By 2015, North American Power completely dissolved the network marketing arm of its company out of nowhere, leaving distributors totally stranded, with years of team-building and rank advancements down the drain. [6]

How much does North American Power cost?
Affiliates could join NAP by becoming electric or gas customers. There’s no sign-on fee or start-up kit, but they would have to pay a monthly energy bill from NAP.

An alternative was to purchase an American Wind or Home Automation Services from NAP, which were $20/month and $70/month respectively.

Products

The company can only provide its services in states which have deregulated their energy industries. That comes to a grand total of 12 states: Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Texas.

Starting out, they offered service in four categories: electric, gas, solar, and wind power.

Now they’re mostly known for offering electricity and natural gas services. They’ve won awards for customer service and offer competitive fixed rates for monthly energy.

NAP is an independent energy supplier that essentially buys electricity wholesale and then breaks it up into various plan options that customers can choose from. Switching to NAP doesn’t require any installations or service visits and can be done online.

One thing that makes NAP unique is their trademarked Understandabill service. It’s a home energy report that delivers data to your regarding your energy usage and energy conservation tips. It provides usage comparisons, forecasts, electricity usage breakdowns, and personalized recommendations at the touch of a button.

Opportunity

There was no differentiation between customer and distributor when NAP was still running on a direct selling model, which is always problematic. It means they had no real retail arm.

A basic customer was always a distributor as well, and vice versa. All customers were part of the affiliate program, whether or not they were interested.

They ran on a hybrid unilevel compensation plan with residual commissions, and they also offered all kinds of bonuses. Manager level affiliates (those with 3 teams of 10 customers) got a $500-$1,000 bonus. Senior Managers (with 3 teams of 25 customers) got another $500-$1,000 bonus.

Directors (those with 5 teams of 25 customers) raked in a $1,500-$3,000 bonus, and Senior Directors (with 3 teams of 100 customers) made bank with $2,500-$5,000 in bonuses.

Recap

While the majority of affiliates at NAP were probably making pennies on the dollar, meaning the shut down of their network marketing arm didn’t actually impact their earnings that much, imagine if you had worked your way up to the top ranks and become a big earner.

These guys were raking in huge sums of cash on a massive downline and a rank that probably took a lot of time and work to achieve. All of the sudden, with no warning, they found themselves essentially fired – jobless and without any income whatsoever.

Can’t say they were completely blindsided, as this kind of activity comes with the territory of working MLM. They shut down out of nowhere, especially in the energy industry.

Look, if it’s financial freedom you seek and you like automated ways to build passive income, there are better ways.
